This is the second book I’ve read from this author and I love her writing style so much. She seems to always be playing with the theme of “first love vs second love” and I think she does it artfully. This book is about loss, love, music and healing. The story flashes back and forth from past to present telling the story of two different relationships and examines the affect they have on the FMC. Truly enjoyed this and read in one day.

Not what I was expecting but still good.

The story follows Emily, a Psychiatrist, in her thirties, married and trying to have a baby. Its told for the first part in two perspectives. Ones is in real time, with her husband Ezra and the other is in letters to her child talking about their father who she met in college, which is where we learn about my personal favorite character, Rob.

Though keep in mind if you are looking at getting this book the plot refers heavily to miscarriage and fertility. If that's not for you neither is this book.

Going into this book I though I was gonna get a Love Triangle. Which I am into. That's not really what this is because the book wasn't about her romantic relationships. Not really. Its more about Emily's journey through grief, change and chasing her dreams. (Although Rob > Ezra. Don't @ Me)

The songs in the book are..... Not bops.

I got this on Audible. The Narrator was Ok. Not my favourite but 2 of the songs were recorded. Which is fun.

All in all. I liked it but Would Not Read Again/10

I absolutely LOVED The Light We Lost, so I was super excited to see this one in the store and HAD to pick it up. Also, this book is pink… and we love that.

I knew from the title and from the first page that this would be heartbreaking. And because it had journal entries/letters within the story, I automatically knew I’d love it. The short chapters made it a quick read, but there were times when I thought the story dragged on a bit. I wasn’t super motivated to pick it up all the time either… but even though I’m not a huge fan of love triangles, I thought it worked decently for this book. I honestly don’t even know who I was rooting for… both men were swoon worthy and frustrating sometimes. I read the author’s Q&A at the end, and someone asked her if she was Team Rob or Team Ezra… and I love that she said she was Team Emily, because same.

Looking forward to reading more from Jill Santopolo!

I adore this book so much. Emily and Ezra's story was so heartbreaking and I loved their marriage dynamic and how they chose each other everyday. Santopolo wrote about the trials and tribulations of marriage , the pain of miscarriage, being a first responder and more. This novel was so full of life it was breathtaking.
