wasn’t expecting this book to be as funny as it was. Very relatable narrator.

A fun, mysterious, spooky read that takes place in one of the most boring places on earth: a cookie cutter house development from the 1990s. I didn't go into this with any expectations of it being a great horror and I think that's the best way to go. There is horror, but there is much more humor as Sam, our main character and archaroentomolgist, tries to figure out why her mom has started to act oddly.  Now am I biased as an archaeologist? Obviously, but it was a fun read! Sam's struggle to come to terms with what could be happening is interesting to read and everything wraps up pretty nearly, and probably with a lot of PTSD for the characters, which is the best you can hope for in a horror novel.

The story builds slowly and it all erupts quite suddenly at the end. It's a bit too predictable for that pacing. I liked the characters and the basic idea but find the execution a bit lacking. Still Kingfisher writes in an enganging way that makes this a fast read.

The ending was so weird. The middle section up until she finds the teeth was slow. I don’t even remember what happened then. I didn’t like the voice for Phil. It sounded too much like his grandfather. I couldn’t visualize him as someone close to Sam’s age. Everything happened in the last third of the book which wasn’t bad but it could’ve been more interesting.

I don’t typically enjoy horror or thrillers, but this felt like Kingfisher was telling me a slightly creepy story in the same room. Times where I both laughed and shuddered out loud!

After thoroughly enjoying What Moves The Dead, I was ecstatic to hear that Kingfisher was coming out with another horror novel. Now having finished it, I am glad to say that it delivered on all my expectations in the best way possible. Set in the south with all its traditions and culture, it subliminally soothes the reader into a false sense of security only to disturb them with suggestions of what horrors and evils may lie underneath. As they solve the mystery of what is really going on in this strange house on Lammergeier Lane the reader can expect to be delighted with its macabre atmosphere and shocked with the supernatural.
