Farley might be one of the most interesting characters in the series, so it was interesting to see her work in Norta. I would have preferred to see more of her past, which is hinted here and there and of grave events that happened, but all in all, it was an interesting read. Nothing major happened and I cannot say I was too invested in this, however I still feel glad that I got to know a few more details about some things. It is not a waste of time.

2 stars. Kind of dry and boring but does set up Shade nicely. The Mission reports were difficult to follow. The big reveal about the relationship between Lamb and Ram was not that mysterious to start with. I’m glad that it was short enough that I didn’t have to decide whether or not to finish it.

Eh. It was okay. I wasn't overly thrilled with this prequel's series introduction, [b:Red Queen|22328546|Red Queen (Red Queen, #1)|Victoria Aveyard|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1449778912s/22328546.jpg|25037051], though I did enjoy it and would say I liked it. This novella was one long narrative, like reading the author's notes on the character. I know the "thing" to do lately is have these midway novellas and prequel novellas, but it's getting to be overkill. We aren't supposed to know everything about all the secondary and tertiary characters in a story. Not everyone should get to be the main character. Case in point.

Great background for the Scarlet Guard. Not my favorite part of this story but learning more about Farley brings the pieces together.

Like the last novella, [b:Queen Song|25005214|Queen Song (Red Queen, #0.1)|Victoria Aveyard|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1437677533s/25005214.jpg|44676143], I actually enjoyed this more than [b:Red Queen|22328546|Red Queen (Red Queen, #1)|Victoria Aveyard|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1449778912s/22328546.jpg|25037051]. Where RQ lacked originality, these novellas start to build up a story of Aveyard's own making. Along with her beautiful writing, these were a treat. Focusing specifically on Steel Scars, we follow Farley. We learn what brought her to Norta, her link to the Scarlet Guard and more about how the rebel movement is run. We also got a good introduction to Mare's brother, Shade, or Shadow, as the Scarlet Guard call him. My only complaint would be that I didn't like the chunks of communication and how they were presented. Maybe it's just the layout on Kindle but they were a little all over the place and they ran on from one another without any extra space so a couple of times I was confused as to who was saying what. I think they'd be better off getting a page or half a page each with clearer marks of where one ends and another begins. On the whole, though, this was written well, a lot more original than RQ, and enjoyable. I'm actually glad that I picked up both of the novellas because we get to see something original from Victoria Aveyard, without so many bits and pieces plucked from other dystopian YA novels, and hopefully that's a sign of what's to come in the future books. I'm looking forward to continuing on with the series!

I honestly regret reading this book. Not bc it was really bad, but bc you dont HAVE to read this novella to understand the story. The first novella was useful bc you finally got the dead queen's story, but this one was kinda pointless. It had a lot of politics and military language, and I didn't understand a thing.

I found this quite boring except anything relating to Shade. I like him a lot.
