questa raccolta di interventi, a mio avviso, non ha davvero molto a che fare con la scienza: alcuni interventi parlano di darwin - anche se l'idea di scienza è trattata molto superficialmente - e sono effettivamente pertinenti alla raccolta, altri (come quello sull'apocalisse e quello sull'io) - per quanto interessanti - c'entrano davvero poco. ho apprezzato molto la parte sulla "disputa" tra hilbert e einstein, ma in generale si parla pochino di fisica, pochissimo di matematica, un bel po' di biologia (che però onestamente è l'ultima che mi viene in mente, tra le materie scientifiche, quando si parla di scienza).

I saw this book on Amazon and was intrigued by the title and the author. I read all of Ian McEwan’s books and particularly liked the ones in which he explored scientific topics, i.e. Saturday, Solar, and Machines Like Me. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this short volume, but I definitely expected more than a collection of speeches and book excerpt loosely connected to science. The excerpts are taken from books that most readers who are familiar with the author will probably have read. The speeches themselves are well written and well researched as one would expect from the author. However, I was disappointed that there was not more of a common thread or perhaps a dedicated essay or short-story to tie the pieces together. I have not read the other volumes in this collection, but based on this one, it seems like a ploy from the publisher to make more money from well-known names.
