I don't normally pick up books written on the back of a TV series but I've been completely taken in by the Star Trek Discovery series so I thought I would give this a go. I'm glad I did. It is very well written and provides an interesting back story that compliments the series very well.

The more I think about this book, the more I love it. It really felt like an episode of ST Discovery, only more. The characterization was on point, the plot and secondary characters were well developed, and everything was masterfully paced and played out. I really got into the story and felt truly invested in what was going on, which doesn't always happen with me and Star Trek novels.

My favorite sections were the Saru and Burnham sections, and seeing their relationship dynamic pre-series, knowing full well how it would end up developing as, was immensely interesting. Actually, that was true with a lot of the pre-existing characters' relationships in this book, and David Mack did a great job of making these dynamics fresh despite that, by now, we already know how they look on screen.

I'm looking forward to reading more of the Discovery novels, including the comics series. Thank you, CBS, for continuing the time honored tradition of having a line of original novels with every new Star Trek series (and it looks like Picard is getting the same!).

After being intrigued by Discovery and wanting more of Georgiou, I decided to pick this up. I had previously read the ST: Destiny trilogy and loved it by David Mack so I had high expectations from this. Mack did not disappoint. I was hooked from the beginning. Mack has a command of action, suspense and adventure. I was surprised by the cross-over aspect. I wasn't expecting that. I loved it.

The one thing that made this a 4 💠 read instead of a 5 💠 was how intricate the tribulations were. I couldn't quite picture those as vividly as everything else. Nevertheless, an absolute joy to read and a great companion to the series.

Enjoyed it. I have always been curious about Michael Burnham's past and this book gave me a few more details about it.

A great backstory starter book for the series that fills in some holes and might make interesting details in season 2of the show.

Captured the new characters especially well.

I enjoyed this book because it gives me a better perspective on the various members of the Shenzhou crew, which is difficult for a TV show to portray because of time constraints and such. I was also grateful for being able to "spend more time" with Captain Georgiou and Captain Pike! They are great characters and great captains, and it was awesome to see how they would deal with the conflict of interests even if they were heading for the same goal.
I particularly loved the interactions between Spock and Michael; that was the main highlight of the book for me! It's great that they both got to learn more about each other and, in turn, about themselves and their connections to Sarek and Amanda.
