It's Christmas 1937 and an eclectic list of guests and staff have gathered for the grand re-opening of Maybridge castle, a newly renovated yet still crumbling hotel deep in the Cumbrian countryside.
An innocent game of murder-in-the-dark turns into a real game of life and death. And by the time the first sherries have been drunk, one of the guests is dead. Someone has changed the rules, but who? Intrepid reporter Daphne King investigates, with the assistance of the elderly amateur sleuth, Mrs Amelia Thewley, in this pre-war cosy crime murder mystery.
This novel, the third featuring Daphne King, takes a while to get going, but it is entertaining enough, and the relationship between Daphne and Mrs Thewley is a delight.
(Side note: Cumbria did not exist until 1974 despite the frequent references to it, and it was, in fact, Cumberland. The research oversight jarred with this particular Cumbrian reader!)
