This has been my favorite read of 2024. Fang Runin is one of the most complex, fascinating fantasy mc’s that I have encountered. R.F. Kuang artfully describes gruesome scenes of battle and genocide in terrible detail. It was impossible to not imagine myself in each sides’ position, feeling and visualizing the scenes described. Kuang leaves you questioning the morality of the mc’s actions. I also love a female main character whose being doesn’t revolve around a male love interest. 5/5 will be finishing the series.

It was an enjoyable read and I'm keen to read the next one. Sometimes the details of the war were a bit boring. And the protagonist is a bit of a Mary Sue, although she has clear flaws and I'm interested to see where her character goes

RF Kuang has a gift. She is able to artfully craft a story with seamless incorporation of backstory. Her characters are well fleshed out. Her conflicts are meaningful. Behind each story there is a second story of real world events and social challenges. I will say this is one of the more horrific war imargery I have read and definitely isn’t for the weak of heart.
