This book is so fucked up. Truly do not read it if you are not prepared for graphic depictions of the horrors of war crimes and sexual violence. Left me asking: do I support women's wrongs? I just don't know but it sure was an incredible read. The author really took the main character and said "what if I made her so much worse?"

As much as I wanted to like this book it just wasn't for me.

The pacing was somehow both achingly slow and way to fast, the many timeskips didn't leave time for relationships or characters to develop properly.

Reading the book felt more like the author giving me a summary. It was also like being told that Character A has this and that trait and has feelings foe this and that character instead of showing me, if that makes sense?

In addition to that the plot was very predictable and the writing style felt like the novel was supposed to be a YA fantasy instead of an adult fantasy book.

This book was brutal. At its core, it's a story about war and colonization and includes many gruesome details of the atrocities that come with them. Please keep in mind that the warfare in this books is heavily influenced by the Japanese colonization of China during World War II/pre WWII-- I was caught off guard by the parallels. I found Rin to be an interesting character as she truly gets to channel and unleash her rage.
