I love this series so much. Rin, Kitay, Nizha, and Vekna all tug my heartstrings. I wish there was a way for them to not go through all of these horrible things. Learning about china and its relation to Japan and operation 721 was add to the pile of sadness

This was an amazing start to what I’m sure will be an amazing trilogy. With that being said, prepare yourself. This has a compelling and universal story involving colorism,  class, war, and death. Heact trigger warnings for some of the most specific, harrowing, bleak, and unfortunately accurate depictions of the horrors of war.
Some of the lore (🙃) and world building requires more explanation in my opinion but I’m sure it will be more clear after another read. Which i will not do for a while for my mental health. This was a brilliant but heavy read.

I enjoyed some parts while other parts I felt like I had to slog through. I liked it enough to finish it and be happy that I did, but I didn’t like it enough to feel the need to continue the series.

This came so close to being a 5-star book.  I devoured part I and most of part II. Once part III started I struggled to finish.  The book became so dark.  The description of the war crimes and the actions of the Mugenese were absolutely disgusting.  But the decision of the main character to commit genocide killed any hope of this story's redemption.  I will not be continuing the series.
