If you can handle the content warnings, then I highly recommend this book! I have a BA in History and I appreciate the historical inspiration that the author uses in this work! I can clearly tell where they were inspired and how they worked their writerโ€™s magic to transcribe it into their book. This book was magical in the explanations and themes that related to actual events in history. I also appreciate the magic world in the book and the explanations that are overviewed throughout the entire series. My teacherโ€™s brain thinks this would be a wonderful book to use with mature high school seniors and any college student. I NEED to finish this series!

Loved this book from the very beginning. The writing makes it come to life and the characters are so vivid in their descriptions.
The one thing I would say is to take the trigger warnings seriously. Every single tw I can think of applies to this book in gruesome, graphic ways, so just beware of this before reading.

๐Ÿ“š Rin is an incredible protagonist. She's more than just your plucky heroine - she's continually making mistakes and learning (and sometimes not learning) and it's fantastic to see a woman character allowed to act that way.
๐Ÿ“š It's also amazing to read an epic fantasy story based on real history that isn't European history.
๐Ÿ“š I loved that every character learned and grew and changed, often after learning more about people different from them.
๐Ÿ“š This world is so layered and detailed, and the characters struggle with really big questions brought on by the social and political intricacies of the story.
๐Ÿ“š Some of the writing was a little heavy handed, but I feel like that can be attributed to the fact that the author was SO YOUNG when she wrote this (seriously, how?)
๐Ÿ“š It's extremely graphic. I guess that's not necessarily a dislike, more like a warning. Everyone will tell you how grim this book is, take them seriously.

I can't wait to read the dragon republic, the showdown is going to be awesome. I love hearing about shaman based magic and Asian involved work. It doesn't hold anything back about the cycle of war and it's ugliness.
