Well I gave it the good old college try but this sucked. To give credit, the first 150-200 pages were actually good and super interesting. This is immediately thrown out the window. Rin is a poor orphan who tests into an elite training academy for the military. The school/training portion of the book was fun for the most part and the plot made sense. Then we get to the attack and everything following. Rin is 19 by the end of the book but she feels 14. She's constantly whining and flip flopping morally and emotionally. Like genocide is bad! No it's necessary! The gods will consume me! No I can control them! Also every military tactic is stupid af. There are zero likable characters and this book is so dense and slow it took me two months to read. Save yourself the time and read basically anything else not by R. F. Kuang.

Oh my god!!! This book!!!!! I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did!!!

It took me a while to really get into the book, tbh the first part was a little boring to me, but I think that if or when I reread I'm going to appreciate it so much more!

But the second and third part broke my heart!!! And I know that the characters didn't make the best or the right choices but they're literally teenagers, Rin is just 19 years old at the end of the book and she's already gone through so much trauma, so I really can't dislike her even after what she did at the end, same with Altan, even if he was awful to Rin through the majority of the book.

This is one of the best fantasy books I’ve read in a long time. And while the plot felt respective sometimes it’s a 5 star for the absolute brilliant writing and how horrific it is. This book is dark. Kuang takes a no holds bar look at genocide and makes you look at it from every angel
Rin is a complicated character. She’s written so well. She’s just a girl, forced into lives she doesn’t ask for to make choices she doesn’t want. I hate what she does and at the same time I don’t blame her.
there was a few chapters I had to put the book down before reading it. That’s how you onow a book is good

And she would call the gods to do such terrible things”

Cannot wait to read the rest of this series. Keep in mind the content warnings it’s a brutal dark book. But one I think everyone should read
