This book feels like two totally different books - maybe even three. The first part feels like standard magic school, the second part feels like weird group-of-people-with-powers hijinks, and then part three goes full HORRORS OF WAR and never stops. It feels very disjointed. The pacing is sloppy. None of the characters from part 1 feel particularly interesting, where as the part 2 ones feel more fleshed out.

Felt like the worldbuilding was just straight up bad, but it had some good ideas (mostly the way the pantheon was handled), so it wasn't a total wash.

Very good book. If you want to read, please please go through content warnings. I loved just about every character and also could not put this book down. It was very dark and very disturbing and intriguing. I don't think the summary does it justice - over half of the book is spent on war, not schooling. Honestly just want everyone to go to therapy.

I have never been more disappointed in a book, and it makes me sad. This had so much potential to be an amazing story but it was filled with so much hate an anger and that’s ultimately how it played out throughout the entire book. I understand having tragedy and horrible things happen but I expect the character to learn and grow from those experiences, not become worse. There was also huge plot holes that I hope get resolved in the second book.

The Poppy War is NOT for the lighthearted, I was not prepared for how dark it was  (still loved it though)

This book was so incredibly dark but so well written. The world building was done so well that it truly felt like reading a story that has actually happened. It was definitely gruesome, though. Check your trigger warnings. If you can't handle detailed descriptions of extreme violence, sexual assault and literal genocide, this book isn't for you.
