I loved this book and can’t wait to read book 2. With that said!! I think it could have been shorter, the world building and info dump was confusing for quite awhile. Bree deals with so many micro aggressions and just flat out in your face overt racism as well. But tying her and her family’s history (and the history of Black people in the US in general) into the legend of King Arthur and African based magic systems as well. Oh my god I ate it up.

This book has SUCH an interesting plot!! I loved the show Merlin and so it is an easy argument to get me to read anything Arther inspired. The plot was so interesting but I found it to be a tad on the confusing side most of the time. I wished there was more of an explanation behind a lot of the traditions and more world building but this book is remarkably character driven for a fantasy. I am still debating whether I will read book 2 but I am hoping that there will be a lot more world building.
Bree is an amazing person with a very strong personality. I don't know if I am just too old to be reading YA but she read really young for her age. She make a lot of very impulsive decisions that don't really make sense unless totally relying on emotion and ignoring any common sense. She is truly fearless but in a childish way that I am hoping the author will move away from in the coming book.
Overall this was a really fascinating book but had some character issues that made it harder to read. I will definitely recommend to younger YA readers.

I just lost interest and from what I’ve heard the racist micro aggressions only get worse from here and I don’t think that’s for me rn
