Muriel Axon is released from a mental institution, and plots revenge upon her social worker and neighbors who she feels have wronged her. A very black comedy of errors, it's a well written book, but not an enjoyable book. The problem is, every character in it is such a miserable sod, I couldn't work up the least bit of sympathy for any of them. It's not a good sign when you hope all the characters in a book commit mass suicide.

Hilary Mantel has the best sense of humor in the world. This book, weird and wild and bizarre, had me in stitches repeatedly. I strongly recommend listening to the audiobook. Very well interpreted.

As weird as Every Day Is... but slightly better, 3.5 stars rather than just 3.

This takes a couple chapters to get humming, but once running this sequel to "Every Day is Mother's Day" continues 10 years later with the domestic grind of the Sidney family which is interrupted by the return of Muriel seeking revenge. Darkly farcical and sometimes just dark; a fun read.

I didn't like this book. It was well written and I can't really say it was bad, it just wasn't the book for me. (Useful review, I know.)
