It's fine but not very memorable to me in terms of story, characters, or art - except the tiny spiky bebe. I don't have specific criticism (which seems not unusual with this book) but I certainly didn't burn with passion. It's nice and I wouldn't wrinkle my nose at another title by the author.

Service: LAPL Overdrive
Title: Kerry and the Knight of the Forest
Author: Andi Watson
Age: 8+
Kerry is a young boy lost in the woods just trying to get back to his parents; not that its denizens are willing to let him go that easily. The story touches upon themes of loss and fear, and what person may do in the face of them.
Watson’s simple style and limited color palate really made this book shine for me. The art is expressive and atmospheric, showing the highs of the characters’ spirits and lows of their moments of weakness and isolation. Recommended to those who would like a more subdued adventure story that is still a lot of fun

I absolutely adore the feel of this book! The textures and colors and fairly sparse dialogue all build to something magical and slightly creepy but still wonderful. I do think the story get a bit bogged down maybe there at the end, but the art more than makes up for any wibbildy story telling in my opinion (& it's not that wibbildy, I quite like the story actually). Pick it up for the art, stay for the fairytale story & Kerry's relentless kindness.

This was a cute, quick read. I like how the Knight wasn't... your typical knight.

Kerry is presented with a choice: either take the long, safe path home in order to save his parents or the short one through the Forest of Shadows and get there with time to spare...

So begins Kerry's adventure through the mythical forest in which an old knight is there is to guide him (if Kerry can find him) and a strange, magical blight sits in wait, waiting to claim the young boy's soul for itself.

With nods towards Henson's Labyrinth and other gentler, coming-of-age fantasy quest stories, Watson's graphic novel tells the story of a young protagonist faced with big decisions about life although, perhaps, with a slight twist in that, for a large part, Kerry teaches the old knight lessons too. Kerry might be naive about many things but when it comes to love and trust, he seems to be worldly-wise. With a lovely message about gifting everyone with the chance to make the right choice, Kerry and the Knight of the Forest is a sweet story with a satisfying ending.

I enjoyed Watson's simple yet bold styling of the forest which suited it well and found the pace was good. The book ends with a series of Top Trumps based on the characters within and some concept artwork too.
