The best one in the series so far. Salvatore's chops as a writer are visibly getting better, and the story line has grown to the point that the characters are taking on more of a three dimensional quality. This one was immensely readable, but there was an issue in the combat of the story. For those of you who have every played Dungeons and Dragons, you will see a very distinct correlation with how the battles play out in this book. Salvatore improved upon his "random encounter" system he had throughout the previous three books, but over a hundred pages of this novel were a battle. That's just too much, when we know what the outcome is likely to be.
Salvatore did throw in a few surprises along the way, which are likely to play nicely into character progression as the novels advance. Fun series.

This entire book is just one long brawl in some caves. I'm not even exaggerating, it starts with something resembling a plot, then some people go to a cave and get ambushed, and the next 300 or so pages are one long chase through the tunnels with a fight scene on every other page. Blegh.

This was, ultimately, an extremely disappointing entry into the series so far perhaps because it began with such promise but then lost itself to seemingly never-ending fight sequences. The book brought our cast of characters back to the Underdark where the remains of Drizzt's family were still seething to regain their lost status by bringing him to Lolth's judgment. To that end they had struck a bargain with the assassin and the story took off.

Unfortunately that was essentially the story in its entirety. Sure, there was a bit of relationship angst, some closures, and some loss, but it all was swept away but the unending fight scenes that just seemed to run together until all I wanted was for it to be over.

I love this world, I love Drizzt and many of the other characters in this series, but unless I see some reason to think that the writing will improve I may have to abandon the series, or perhaps stop reading them back to back.

I wanted to like it but it was only MEH.

Been many years since i last read this book, and i had forgotten some of the items that appeared in this book. Including one of the biggest.
I liked how this book managed to tie up the previous two trilogies - by bringing Drizzt family back into it.
