The ending leaves a lot to be desired, especially with the character of Bobbi, but it is still an incredible novel.

I’m not sure I get on with Sally Rooney’s style very much. Her character writing is frankly weird - they all seem to moulded with a kind of uncanny realism, where enough very specific details are included to make the characters seem normal and quirky, but in actual fact are bizarre and kind of alien to normal human behaviour.

Some of the dialogue felt pretty unnatural and weird, and every single character was deplorable and insufferable.

The actual reading experience was average, not overly excited to continue reading but not hating every moment. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough social commentary for me to save it, unlike with Normal People. Speaking of, the amount of parallels and identical moments between Conversations with Friends and Normal People was kind of wild. It was quite a weird moment of déjà vu reading this so soon after finishing Normal People.

I wish this lived up to the hype but for me it didn’t! Maybe others would enjoy it more.

the most interesting character i’ve read in a while. you know when you’re younger and want to be like the main character in a book? i found myself wanting to be like Frances which is strange because I don’t want to be cold or sleep with a married man but the way she thought about things - she’s very apathetic but also calculated? I found it really intriguing and wonder how other people would see me if I was less emotionally invested in everything. I know people complained about the emails in this - i liked it, it gave a sense of gravity to the discussions within them.
