I cannot tell if I’m supposed to cheer for the main character or hate her. I guess that’s kind of the whole point.

Enjoyable but would say that there was sections of the book my brain just skipped over rather than actually being invested in reading. Well written but would 1000% recommend normal people over this book.

I am 20 and feeling lost, and this book just felt like a small peak into my life, like, literally, a conversation I would have with your friends. I love how Sally Rooney exposes complicated feelings and emotions that feel so mixed and real. Racial and socio-economical issues are also present in a way that does not feel like they are being forced into the plot, but they are part of the characters, and affect them.

I have absolutely devoured it. Emotionally, not that many books make me feel that many things.

This book explores modern day relationships and the idea of love and how what is conventional may not fit you.

At first I found it a little dull as I couldn’t relate to the characters but as the story progressed I found myself reading more and more; I still found it hard to relate to the characters but found aspects of them I could relate to.

As always, Sally Rooney’s writing is very character driven and so if you’re expecting a complex plot, this may not be the book for you. However, this book really made me think about my relationships in life.

I’m not sure I get on with Sally Rooney’s style very much. Her character writing is frankly weird - they all seem to moulded with a kind of uncanny realism, where enough very specific details are included to make the characters seem normal and quirky, but in actual fact are bizarre and kind of alien to normal human behaviour.

Some of the dialogue felt pretty unnatural and weird, and every single character was deplorable and insufferable.

The actual reading experience was average, not overly excited to continue reading but not hating every moment. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough social commentary for me to save it, unlike with Normal People. Speaking of, the amount of parallels and identical moments between Conversations with Friends and Normal People was kind of wild. It was quite a weird moment of déjà vu reading this so soon after finishing Normal People.

I wish this lived up to the hype but for me it didn’t! Maybe others would enjoy it more.
