This is a clear personal favorite. Rooney captures the pain and confusion of being young, the loneliness of growing up, the vulnerability and flux of relationships (romantic or otherwise). Frances, the main character, is unaware of her ability to be hurt and to hurt others in a way that feels deeply truthful. The book is still joyful and funny at times, and deeply observant. I grew to love Frances as a character. A wonderful read, and an incredibly impressive debut from the author.
Minor: Abortion, Suicidal thoughts, and Sexual violence
