I made the mistake to think it was a good idea to finish this book after 3hrs of sleep, a very, very rough week, on the bus, on my my way to work

I'm a complete mess and have to get through the day but I NEED TO PROCESS THIS

Joe... Ox.... STUPID CARTER

I love this family so damn much.

First reread 5/13-5/15/24

This book packs an emotional punch. Gavin learning to trust, learning people can and will care about him, agreeing to leave with the BP, being so willing to offer himself up at the end. The town showing OUT and refusing to leave their wolves behind. Carter putting words and acknowledgement to what he feels for Gavin. Talking to Ghost!Kelly. Wandering aimlessly across the country similar to how they hunted Richard Collins down. Telling Gavin “hey, it’s okay, look away” in the cave… this may be the most impactful book because its not JUST Carter and Gavin’s story, or rather Livingstone doesn’t affect JUST Carter and Gavin. Will, Ox, the town, the battle, the aftermath. Just goddamn. That’s what I say about the whole mf series. Goddamn. Still without a doubt one of the best series I’ve ever read in my entire 36 years on this planet thus far. I might even need to reread them all again via audio at work in a few months. I think I’d like to take back any previous answer I’d given in regards to “If you could live in any world across any book you’ve ever read, which would it be?” because I’ve chosen Harry Potter in the distant past, and most regularly the Percy Jackson world, and even the Shadowhunter world a few times… or if nothing else I’d like to rotate between Green Creek, Percy Jackon, and Shadowhunters. It’s a question about fictional worlds, so yes, it is allowed.

[contemporary, romance, paranormal, trauma, young-new adult, LGBTQ+ author and characters and relationships]

Trigger Warning: physical abuse, psychological abuse, trauma

This book differs from the rest of the series as we follow the first person view of Carter rather than his love interest Gavin. This relationship is pretty fluffy. It's not the best and it's not the worst. You can expect all hackles to be raised and the stakes to be at the highest level, the trauma in this one is much more heightened than any other book.

It is a paranormal romance but still has those comfortable tropes of young adult: hero-moments, self sacrifice, longing and internal dialogue that prevents any of them from talking to the other first, etc. The romance itself is satisfied and the paranormal troubles seem to complete with a tidy bow. I thought the final boss was pretty ridiculous and undefeatable, but I do wish he was a bit more of an ambiguous villain - as he was written throughout the series he was pretty squarely capital V Villain with 0% anything else.

More than the others, this one pushed the "mate because destiny" storyline which kind of undercuts the idea of choice that was present until this book. I guess choice just sort of fizzles out when you have a super boss to beat.
