Way good and entertaining. I cant believe it took me this long to read a Joe Pickett novel. Definitely a series I will be catching up with in the future.

We finally learn more about Nates back story in this book.

I have read the 11 prior C.J. Box books and for me this is the best so far. The plots are interesting and the setting is the beautiful northwest US, Wyoming Montana, Idaho. The thing I love about these books are the values which animate the absorbing stories i.e. love of family, friends, nature, country, and independence. The author doesn't preach. He allows the plot and the characters to illustrate these principles.
Much of this particular book centers around Nate Romanowski a long time friend of Wyoming game warden, Joe Pickett. Nate is a highly skilled, ex special forces soldier who lives off the grid. He is an exceptionally interesting character and in this book we learn how and why Nate came to be Nate.

This series has always trod a bit closer to "thriller" than "police procedural" and I'd say this installment is fully over that line, but what a fun ride!

I wouldn't recommend just plucking this one from the middle of the series if you've not been reading along as the back story from previous books plays too important a role, but if you're reading along it's definitely a book to look forward to.

Breakneck speed throughout, and we finally find out what dark deeds have driven Nate to become the man he is.

This was probably not the place to start this series. Meh.
