As I read this book, I actually lived in four different places in Washington state, and this book was a wonderful companion to recognizing the specialness if each place. It is so clesrly an effort that stems from love for this place on earth, and if you live here and want to get to know this place better, please read it.

This is one of very few books that I have actually not wanted to end. It was a real pleasure to read and is the reason I pulled out of an intense reading slump. I highly recommend!

Absolutely lovely.
More meditative and appreciative than other field guides, though I’ve never read another field guide straight through.
Heavy on poetry and spare on nuts and bolts information, but it also recognizes that the world and science and understandings of history are changing. Both timely and timeless.
I love how it takes you on a lingering tour, from seashore to city, to mountains, to grasslands, and back to the deep ocean. I liked the Muskeg, temperate rainforest, Salish sea, and the loowit-mount saint helens chapters especially.
Now to get out and explore and appreciate more of this beautiful pocket of the world.
