It probably didn't help that I read this book right after a George Saunders collection because it was a lot like a lesser version of Saunders. Not quite scary, but more grotesquely funny. Not bad. Just not super fresh feeling.

Grotesque! Exuberant! Both fantastical and genuine...extremely heartfelt, beautiful horror.
This book was wild. I kind of liked it. I kind of didn’t.
Joey Comeau is my hometown hero, and I love his works generally, but this was a thoroughly meh journey into his brilliant mind.
A fascinating read, though a tad muddled; briskly paced and cleverly told, it's a uniquely horrifying experience all built upon a steady level of effective humor. The way the author is able to endear us to these characters so quickly is admirable, as is his ability to make the most horrifying elements seem mundane (there's a headless ghost in this story that's little more nuisance than a homeless dog), creating an experience that's like few I've come across. With its humor and its pacing, it'll be a one-day read for most people, and a fun way to spend a Halloween evening.
