More stars if I could. This series has become one of my all-time favorites and each book is just that much better than the one before.

In this installment, Parker is dealing with the grief from events in the last story, along with coming more into his role as Windrose, while people from various parts of his past keep showing up and throwing spanners into his present. And the brownies, of course. Both the mystery and the romance just work better if you’ve read the books in order - the mystery because, while it’s about the apparent overthrow of the shifter gangs in San Amaro, it touches also on aspects from past books that led to this. As for the romance - Nick and Parker are still swoony soulmates without getting annoyingly cute about it.

Big topics are covered: grief, loyalty, identity, family. But also little ones - just how horrifying is Parker’s car, anyway? And there’s still a huge hole in the back yard. All of it may make this a difficult book to get engrossed in if you haven’t read the others, but it’s a binge-worthy series, definitely.

Parker is put through the wringer in this one. We get to see him grow through some pretty tricky emotional situations. Nick is of course an excellent partner through it all. As always the plot is gripping and the mystery is complex. I am so happy to be listening, Greg Tremblay is the perfect voice for all of these characters.

Another great installment in this series - I really can't get enough of the characters and this world that Kai Butler has created.
