This book was way more interesting than I thought it would be. I seriously loved it. There is a lot of science talk that I don’t understand and it doesn’t explain it all, but it didn’t hinder the experience. I really enjoyed the sass ones of the main character, Mark Watney. He is such a punk and I love those types of characters.

This book had me hooked from near the beginning. Although the pace is a bit slower than I'm used to, the main character kept me engaged throughout the entire thing, and it's written in such a way that I felt like I was right there with him throughout the book. There was also a fun element of humor mixed in with the survival elements. I am obsessed with this book and I will absolutely recommend to anyone I can

Ending spoiler:
I LOVED THIS BOOK SO INCREDIBLY MUCH BUT I WANTED TO SEE HIM MAKE IT ALL THE WAY BACK TO EARTH DAMMIT

In this book, Mark Watney is an astronaut who is part of the Ares 3 mission which is the 3rd mission by NASA to land people on Mars. The year of the mission isn't stated, but the book does mention the Pathfinder vehicle being landed on Mars around 20 years ago. That puts the Ares 3 mission around 2016 which is a few years after the publication of the book. It presents a more optimistic view of how far exploration of Mars has advanced than the current reality. At the beginning of the book, a strong storm hits the area the where the crew has their station (the station they stay at is called the Hab). Watney is blown away by the storm. The remainder of the crew believes him dead and is forced to leave the surface of Mars without Watney. Watney was injured, but he didn't die. Not long after, people in Nasa discover that Watney is alive. The remainder of the book is Watney trying to survive long enough so a mission to save him can be mounted. This is a hard science Sci-Fi book. There are a lot of details about the technical things Watney and the NASA people do to try to get Watney back home. Watney is a mechanical engineer and a botanist so the technical things he does are believable. Although I found the detailed explanations mostly interesting to read, there were points I found them tedious. There were some off-color jokes and statements made by people in the book that some may find a little offensive. As I worked in technical fields, I found these jokes and statements realistic. Many of us who work in those areas are a little awkward. We deal better with things than people. The book was very thrilling. I recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a problem with the hard science parts of it (there are a lot of these) and the off-color jokes and statements (there aren't that many of these).

This book was a RIDE. I liked that it was sort of mixed media by having the Sol Logs & different messages between NASA & Watney so that helped it get a little easier to get through while reading. I had watched the movie around the time it came out, but I literally only remembered one scene - and it’s a scene that happens relatively early on in the book
of where he blows himself up in the HAB while making water
. So I was glad that I was essentially going into this book blind on what would happen.

Andy’s comedic writing I thought was fun and was also exactly how I would be acting if I had to spend over a year alone on Mars. I found myself laughing at many moments in this book and it helped me to enjoy it even more. I don’t know if I would have liked it as much without the comedic moments.

”Life is amazingly tenacious.”

Watney literally going ‘hey NASA look titties!’ and ‘your mom’s a hoe’ in public forums was UNHINGED and I love it for him
the way Beck & Johanssen thought they were slick and secretive but they all just KNEW was so funny that’s one of my favorite tropes
