This book picked up a few months after the previous one. The badly beaten body of a young woman has been found and it turns out to be April who has been missing since the end of Stone Cold. Immediate suspicion is on her cowboy boyfriend and his family closes ranks to protect him. In the meantime, Joe is also dealing with a grouse preservation issue, and Nate is battling his own problems. This was a well plotted book that continues to show a complex family. Joe is far from perfect and it was nice to have his belief in his assumptions challenged.

Another Joe Pickett book that deserves 6 stars out of 5.

C.J. Box has a way of keeping his characters and plots interesting, very fluid and his characters relatable and likeable. I had decided to limit myself to 100 pages a day because I had a lot of work to do, but somehow I got ahead of myself and now the book's all finished.

I have to say, out of the last few installments, this one is my favourite. The Cates family makes a great group of villains, the story's good, the stakes are high, there's a snowstorm, Nate takes a backseat and Joe (finally) kills a bad guy again and runs over another, so what's not to like?

Box is heavily preserved bread his stories never go stale. He is such a literary comfort.
Take a little Joe Pickett, Wyoming game warden. Throw in his wife, his 3 daughters, his dog, Daisy, and his best friend Nate Romanowski - master falconer. Now bring on the Cateses, the nastiest little family since Ma Barker, and you have a gripping mystery that won't let go. In a previous Joe Pickett story, Joe's adopted daughter, April, runs off with world class bull rider Dallas Cates.

Now she's back: found beaten, bloody, and unconscious in a ditch outside Saddlestring, Wy. Joe is certain the person who did this to her is Dallas Cates. But an anonymous tip and all the evidence points to Tilden Cudmore, a survivalist and conspiracy theorist. Still, Joe thinks Dallas has something to do with it. The Cateses, an old hunter and outfitter, his three nasty sons, and the ruler of them all, Brenda - wife and mother and brains of the operation, are as vicious a bunch of backwoods rattlers you can find.

Now April is in a coma in a hospital in Billings, Nate Romanowski has been ambushed and lies near death in the same hospital, and Joe is determined to find out who did it. I almost never say this, but I couldn't put it down.

BLUF: Great book. Great standalone. The story is not suspenseful for the most part, but it is captivating. I highly recommend.

While solving a case regarding endangered species, Forrest Ranger Joe Pickett receives news that they found a girl badly beaten on the side of the highway. They aren‰ЫЄt sure, but she resembles his daughter. Joe takes us on a journey to find out what happened to the girl and the endangered species.

Really, the summary does not give this book any justice. CJ Box hooks readers from the start and does not let go. By weaving the multiple vantages into one story, CJ Box will leave you on the edge of your seat. Unfortunately, I cannot say much about this book without giving anything away! Characters are realistic, writing is wonderful, storyline draws you in, and this can be read as a standalone. Only thing I had a problem with in this book is that I don‰ЫЄt know Western terms ‰ЫТ but there were few are far between.

I will definitely be reading more from CJ Box!

**I received this book as part of GoodRead‰ЫЄs First Read program**

I've been working my way through CJ Box's catalog for a while. I enjoy his work a lot, but it's not pressing for me. I like Joe Pickett, but some of his decisions frustrate me. The family dynamic is compelling, though, and with Endangered, Box proves that an old dog can sometimes have new tricks. It is, by far, one of the best books in the Joe Pickett series.

Joe's daughter, April, ran away with a cowboy at the end of the previous book, and in the first chapter of this one, Joe receives word that April has been found beaten severely, unconscious, and near death. The likely suspect is the cowboy she ran off with, Dallas Cates.

Those of you who know Joe know that if you mess with his family things are like to get a little Western...

The mystery of who really hurt April comes together nicely, and there's a subplot with the enigmatic Nate Romanowski, of course. The story twists and turns well until it arrives at a climax that merges all the loose ends into a well-written knot.

Dallas Cates's family, particularly his mother, Brenda, are an interesting nest of vipers, and Box allows that to shine through.

This is a worthy entry in the Pickett series. Well worth the time.

One of my favorites from this excellent series. A bit sad that I'm all caught up and have to wait for more!
