New Suns

The Galactic Tourist Industrial Complex, Tobias S. Buckell : 5/5 So much fun and interesting
Deer Dancer, Kathleen Alcala: 3/5 Well written but too short
The Virtue of Unfaithful Translations, Minsoo Kang: 5/5 Very epic for something so short, I need to read a full novel by Kang
Come Home to Atropos, Steven Barnes: 4/5 Really fun and funny, with a serious undertone
The Fine Print, Chinelo Onwualu: 5/5 A very melancholic but interesting story. I absolutely loved it
Unkind of Mercy, Alex Jennings: 4/5 A really interesting horror esque story with an interesting ending
Burn the Ships, Alberto Yanez: 3.5/5 Just wasnt feeling this one, however it was very well written. I also liked the end.
The Freedom of the Shifting Sea, Jaymee Goh: 5/5 This was so fantastic ! Like sooo good.
Three Variations on a Theme of Imperial Attire, E. Lily Yu: 5/5 A fantastic retelling of a fairy tale classic, but just that bit bloodier.
Blood and Bells, Karin Lowachee: 4/5 I really liked the relationship between father and son.
Give Me Your Black Wings Oh Sister, Silvia Moreno-Garcia: 4/5 I really liked this, just wait it was a little longer, but I do love the darknesss to it and it was excellently paced for something so short.
The Shadow We Cast Through Time, Indrapramit Das: 5/5 Utterly fantastic ! Need to read more by this author
The Robots of Eden, Anil Menon: 3.75/5 I want to read more from this author, I liked a lot of this story but overall it just didn't click
Dumb House, Andrea Hairston: 3/5 This was also very well written but just didnt click with me.
One Easy Trick, Hiromi Goto: 3/5 Very weird and interesting concept, but it was a very odd story.
Harvest, Rebecca Roanhorse: 4/5 A very good dark tale
Kelsey and the Burdened Breath, Darcie Little Badger: 5/5 I will be reading more from Little Badger ! That was fantastic. I love a good spooky tale and the world building is so well done in a short story.

Some of stories are captivating, but I'm not big on short story compilations.

So many of these stories interweave fantasy, myths and science fiction in a truly compelling way. Not all of them resonated with me, but many will keep me thinking about them for quite some time.
Definitely a great way to get to know new SFF authors.

An interesting collection of unique short stories (with some exceptions). The worst were burrowed in the middle, but everything before and after was engaging and enjoyable. The subtler stories were my favourites: The Fine Print, The Robots of Eden, One Easy Trick. The Virtue of Unfaithful translations was challenging to follow; it's my opinion that high fantasy is best suited to long novels rather than short stories.

I was really excited when one of the Read Harder prompts for this year was a sci-fi/fantasy anthology edited by an author of color. Some of my favorite things in the genre in recent years have been by authors of color, so I was excited to start New Suns. With celebrated authors like Rebecca Roanhorse and Silvia Moreno-Garcia, this anthology did not disappoint for quality writing that stretched the bounds of possibility. Each story blew my mind, at least a little bit.

The main problem I had with this anthology was me. Each story was such an engrossing well-developed world that I couldn't just binge the book. Each story begged for a break before starting the next one to digest all the nuance contained within. Many of these reminded me of my favorite author to read in college, Henry James, with complex worlds contained within relatively few words. After one year plus of a global pandemic, my brain doesn't want to have to carefully digest every word to get the full meaning behind the story being told. That is to say, the writing is impeccable, just not what I'm looking for right now.

Also there's the perpetual frustration for me with short stories that they're not novels. If they're really good I want to read more. I'm frustrated by all the unanswered questions I have after the final words. What happens next ?!? So again, great writing, just not what I was looking for in my leisure reading right now.

But I love that an anthology like this exists, and while I spend most of the review complaining that this isn't what I wanted to read right now, I actually enjoyed all the stories. I think I would've just prefered if any one of them was a really engrossing novel, so I could have lost myself in one of those worlds for a few days, instead of for a few minutes before bed one night.

I'm so excited for the variety of voices starting to become popular in sci-fi, giving me exciting new options outside of the handful of types of stories I grew up with.
