This took me forever to finish because I only had the audiobook but it was so good, and I think a slower reading pace was beneficial for this book
This was slow to start for me. I couldn’t get into it at all, but the characters started to pull me just as I wanted to give up and I’m so glad I stuck with it. It ended up being a great story.

My neurotic, stressed, unsure, and sometimes sad soul related to this book more than I’ve related to any other book before. I saw pieces of myself in Maddie and it made me feel better about myself. Sure, Maddie is her own character and she had more levels to deal with. But this book was what I needed in this moment.
I loved the main character. She was flawed in all the right ways. I don’t personally know anyone like her, so that’s always a plus! I like books that introduce me to people/cultures unlike mine. On the other hand, it’s not really my kind of book. Not a lot happens. It’s a book about feelings in everyday life. Nothing exciting. 5 Star character development. 3 Star story.

I really adored this coming of age story - Maddie/Maame was so easy to root for and felt very relatable. She is figuring things out in her twenties while also caring for her father who has Parkinson’s. Maddie feels trapped by her family’s expectations of her and feels like she’s not really living her life. We follow her along as she moves out and is discovering herself. There were heartbreaking as well as heartwarming moments. I really enjoyed learning about Ghanaian culture and the family norms that come from that. You really feel for Maddie trying to balance it all while she struggles with her own mental health. Definitely enjoyed this one!
