Maame reminds me of a few other books I’ve read recently about twenty something Black women in London making their way in the world. It’s likely all true but feels a little formulaic - struggling in the workplace, dating racist white guys, managing a difficult family. Maame was much the same but there was also real heart in her attempts to navigate responsibilities of caring for her sick father and dealing with a challenging mother. Overall, warm and sweet but nothing too distinctive really. Rounded up from 3.5 stars.

forgot i read this, this year, I think it was good
This is a moving and powerful story about grief, loss, and coming of age in your mid-twenties. At points it made me giggle, but then it also broke my heart in the best ways.
I will admit that this book was really triggering for me. I knew I was taking a risk when I chose this one for BOTM, but I didn’t realize from the synopsis that there would be SO much focus on Maddie’s dad. However, the depiction of grief is SPOT. ON. and made me feel understood so it was also weirdly cathartic?
Lastly, I loved the ending. I was always rooting for Maddie. Watching her come out of tragedy, stress, and depression inspired me so much. Overall EXCELLENT book that sent me into one of the worst book hangovers of my life.

Refreshing to read a contemporary story of a woman (of color!) navigating her own life and figuring out what she wants. And I was sure glad to see she finally

It’s rare that a book captures grief so authentically. That was hard to read but also hard to put down. It took me months to finish but in reality I read it in about three sittings. I will remember this book for a long time.
One young woman's journey to adulthood with a broken family, a stupid job, and weird dating experiences. We can all relate to this one. Loved the recorded book and that great British accent.
