very unfocused satire! it's difficult to really find an overarching point being made about belgian society with verhulst taking shots at virtually everyone and everything, often contradicting himself for good measure (his narrator criticises borders as mere human invention having in previous pages made comparisons between immigrants and rats). this scattershot approach does however help to flesh out a very simple plot.
