I liked the dystopian aspects of this book, and thoroughly enjoyed the description of the changed landscape and Wivenhoe village, and the matter of fact way that people had got used to it, because there wasn't much choice. The ideas about how people might act once structures of society like parliament and police disappear were really interesting but a bit underdeveloped.

*spoiler*
I didn't understand why Helen had to keep the fact she was leaving secret from her son. It wasn't illegal to leave, there weren't limited places, her daughter in law had family living abroad.. It didn't make any sense but it was a huge part of the story.

Lacked action but the characters had depth, I wanted to read more about their journey.
