No idea what's going on. Keeps flicking between time periods. Left it when he went to a wedding. Don't know when or who anyone is.

The last Wexford. Very elegiac; clever interweaving of past and present, personal and professional. One of Rendell's usual good reads.

Comfort reading while I'm supposed to be marking essays. This one has its interesting bits--we find out about Wexford's past--but drags a bit in the middle. The end wasn't quite what I expected so I guess that's good.

hella hella boring. I should have given up on this one, but I needed a downloadable audiobook while traveling, and didn't really have the time to pick out and download a different one once i realized how bad it was.

Another solid installment in the Inspector Wexford mystery series. This one is especially interesting because Wexford reminisces about his past throughout the story.

I really enjoy a procedural mystery, and the Wexford series is about as procedural as it gets. But Wexford as a character is about as dull as they come, and in this book in particular he's constantly looking backwards and reminiscing about the good old days, although he is fairly progressive in his views, for an old guy. Wexford's only vices are the occasional glass of red wine and cashews (which, for some reason his wife doesn't want him eating), and he's just so strait-laced with a stable home life and interior life. It's just more interesting when detectives have some imperfections or demons or are haunted by something. But the Inspector Wexford mysteries are well-constructed and entertaining. Ruth Rendell always includes some hot-button issue as well. In this novel, it's prejudice against Muslims. She means well, but it does feel a bit clumsy at times.

I've read a number of Wexford books in the past, and enjoyed them, but this one had too much back story and not enough plot for my tastes. A disappointment generally.

This is the final installment in the Inspector Wexford series and it doesn't disappoint. I have been reading these books for a very long time and I am sad to see them end, but now there will be space in my life to start on another detective series. Any suggestions?
