The format wasn't my style, but I loved the comprehensive approach - it gave weight to four hundred years to give each five year period its own time. I also enjoyed the diversity of authors and perspectives, and their unique chosen subjects of focus.

So much to learn. I read this in stages and reread many chapters. It could easily be a college course of study.

Not right now. Find it hard to follow the different voices of each chapter. A lot of repetition.

This is an amazing historical account of black American history from the past 400 years. A collection of poets, writers, intellectuals, and more.

Interesting story arrangement. 80 authors. 400 years since the beginning of African America. Each author takes 5 years and writes about it. It is kinda like 80 essays. I heard a lot that I had not heard before. Well done!

100 essays written by African Americans detailing their story from 1619 to 2019. This often feels like a survey course in African American history mixed with sermons from the pulpit.
This is a book that will make you feel all the feelings and give you a long list of topics to research.

It's a daunting task to take on such a large swath of history, but wow did this nail it. Having so many collaborators of historians, social sciences folks, poets, and storytellers collided into a book I couldn't help but keep reading. (Reading via listening in my case. This audiobook is fully casted and it's a wonder to listen to.) Each little essay and poem was a moment in time that captured so many different people and snippets of life from so many different angles. I absolutely intend to read it again, and I can't recommend it enough.

I might buy this one; really great and I loved how it was organized. Definitely recommend.
