A well-done epistolary novel with exceptional world-building. While exceptionally slow, the promise of the novel is not in its plot, but in the developing relationship between the two main characters. I found them extraordinarily sympathetic and likable; however, the lack of any plot (with something so ominous looming in the background) made it a somewhat frustrating read. Reminded me a lot of Lose the Time War.

I loved this for so many reasons. It had a compelling mystery and an adorable love story. I think the way knowledge was shared in epistolary form was very well done. I love all (well most) of these characters so much and it was so cool to read their different writing styles. I have a special soft spot for E. because I found her so relatable. I had no idea this was part of a series before I read it and now I am so excited for book 2!!

I don't think I've ever read something quite like this. I love epistolary novels, and this one worked very well in that format. I'm not a big dark academia fan but if this is what light academia is, I can definitely see myself indulging more in the genre (I'm soft, what do you want from me). There are some pacing issues and perhaps things that could be cut in the first half, but the inventiveness of the world and the potential for the sequel set up are incredibly intriguing. A perfect rainy day read.

I would classify this as fantasy-lite with romance elements.  We get the story of Henerey and E, when their siblings discover their letters after their mysterious disappearance.  While you can see Henerey and E's affection unfold, the underwater mystery held more of my attention.  This book ends on a cliffhanger and I will be tuned in to see where everyone goes from here.
