I'm writing this review ASAP so the other people on the waiting list can get my copy LMAO. I enjoyed this book so much and I really can't wait until the others read it!
The gentle plot follows Diana and the other Ladies of the Directory who find they have a surprising amount of power as heiresses being preyed upon by fortune hunting young men. The friendship between Diana and Lady Regina was one of the biggest highlights of the story for me. Almost more so than the romance between Diana and Maxwell. There was a slight enemies-to-lovers air to the relationship with Diana and Maxwell at the beginning, but Maxwell is just a good guy.
Seeing all the couples (four!) develop and come together over the course of the book felt so satisfying. All the love had me grinning. I would've liked to see more interactions between the bizarre Mr. Pryce and Ms. Jarmyn!
Suzanne Allain wove a critique of how misogynistic society at the time was. I felt it in my bones when Lady Regina said "you were still taught you had to be agreeable to them; dance with them but not too close; flirt with them, but not too much; smile at them, but not too often." Regina continued; "[w]ell, this is our chance to hold a position of power. Let them dance to our tune is what I say." I felt like the ladies could've led the men on a more wild goose chase than what ended up happening. That line lead me to believe I was in store for one hell of a revenge, when that wasn't really the case.
Despite that, I didn't find myself bored and the pace moved along quickly. I read this book in 4 hours! It was a short and sweet.
Last thing I'd like to mention was how delighted I felt when Suzanne Allain included some fashion details. Early in the book, Diana is described as wearing lemon yellow gloves paired with a white muslin morning dress and a rose-coloured velvet spencerette. I find it so satisfying to read descriptions of historical dress! It's immersive. And it satisfies my fashion loving curiosity.
Also Diana is an angel. The way she handled the Mildred situation made me want to stand up and clap!
This was so sweet and wholesome!!! Everything ended up so happily ever after, I have such a silly grin on my face.

Omg, this was too cute!!
I tend to read just straight-up filthy books so this was a really nice palate cleanser.
The way I was squealing like a little girl when anything remotely romantic would happen
