slow-paced

This is good for people looking for something low stakes, chaste, and sweet. It's also nice and short.

Also every joke is carefully explained and you get a lot of bonus content about  Vauxhall Gardens, which the author clearly researched thoroughly and wants you to know just how thoroughly. Despite being short, not that much actually happens, there's no real conflict between our leading couple (or any other couple) beyond their first meeting, and no one really has to grow or change. Our FMC is a perfect lady despite growing up a poor sailor's daughter with no fresh insight or condemnation of the very rich. All this was fine to sit at a 3 star read, but then the book did the thing historical romances often do where the narrative champions the rights of (rich) (white) women but doesn't batt an eye at the MMC calling a job at the East India Company 'honorable work'.

Total waste of time, unfortunately. I had it on hold for a long time and was looking forward to reading it because of the premise. The author does nothing with the premise. Or with the characters. And in absence of character or plot, it's just surprising she managed to churn out 200 pages of nothing.

A very sweet quick read. I enjoyed the lightness in the writing, and was glad that it was pretty short because I don't think it could have sustained being longer without dragging. It was very much modern sensibilities placed onto the past, but that's what I signed up for and it delivered. It will be fun to revisit Pride and Prejudice after this.

suzanne allain, i have to ask, when you say “twickenham isn’t exactly timbuktu” are you making a reference to to the Timbuktu episode of iconic BBC radio show Cabin Pressure? probably not but had to ask.

loved this. i love everything she does. this was SO sweet plot-wise not as fun as some of her others, but the characters made up for it!! diana and regina’s friendship is so sweet and endearing. maxwell is a progressive KING which is a wild twist. this has some major yearning. short n sweet n satisfying.

4.5/5 ⭐️
Suzanne Allain has become one of my favorite Insta-buy authors, she wonderfully captures the true air and essence of Jane Austen in her stories. And you can tell she knows and loves the time period.
I will admit, I don’t think I loved this story as much as I did her others (Miss Lattimore’s Letters is my favorite), I still highly enjoyed this story. It did lull a little a in the middle, but was still a quick, enjoyable reading that had me giggling and kicking my feet.
I highly recommend this book and all her others for anyone who is a fan of Jane Austen or any contemporary authors of that time (I really enjoyed when she gave a little shout out to Evelina which is my favorite story). This book is sweet and fun taking a twist where the ladies alter the rules, showing that the author is aware of the social rules. It’s perfect for any fan of Jane Austen
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for providing an advance reader copy of this book for my honest review.
