Recently reread this for my Irish literature class and I am blown away from everything I initially missed. Kavanagh's poetry beautifully captures the humility of Irish rural life and refutes the frequently voiced sentimental, romantic exaltation of the Irish peasant normally seen during the Irish literary renaissance.
Although Kavanagh himself was a little more rugged than the average poet, his poetry captures the tenderness of life. Moreover, his aggressive individualism has marked his place in history as one of the most important Irish poets of the twentieth century—if not ever.
