The audio version is fantastic. Two Scots happily squabbling while sharing stories about Scotland's history, people and landscape while filming two shows together and the unexpected friendship that developed along the way. Sam and Graham filmed a must-see companion to this book that's available on Starz.
For fans of Outlander (books and or series) and or "Men in Kilts" only! If you're not one of these, you'll probably find this boring and pointless, so be warned!
I've only read the first Outlander book as 1) I'm not a big fan of series fiction, and 2) they're all very long books and I get impatient with that too. I usually find lots of edits I would have made in any very long book. I enjoyed the first book much more than I thought I would. This year a friend and I are watching the series together, which has been super fun! My family is still semi-isolating because of Delta covid, so we're not doing much out and about, and it's been very entertaining to have my friend over & just geek out over this 18th century Scotland time travel soap opera!
My friend that I'm watching with gave me "Clanlands" and it was a perfect read not only for our Outlander binge but also I've been laid up with sciatica so good books that aren't too demanding are essential!
Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish are two of the stars of Outlander. Heughan is young and McTavish is older, having acted in theater, movies and TV for over 35 years. They became friends on the set of Outlander and decided it would be fun to create the "Men in Kilts" series. In order to pitch that idea, they journeyed around Scotland using various modes of transportation (bikes, sidecar motorcycle, kayak, etc), collecting and discussing bits of Scottish history, tasting whisky, and taking the piss out of one another! They made their journey into this book and successfully pitched the TV show! (Why don't I ever have these ideas?! I could totally travel around Scotland doing all those things!) They also reflect on their careers and themselves, and find a deeper friendship.
I enjoyed this for exactly what it was, and if you're a fan of Outlander, Men in Kilts, or possibly of humorous Scotland observations/light travel memoirs, you'll probably enjoy this too. It's NOT a history book by any stretch.

A wonderful insight into the making of the TV show Men in Kilts as well as a travel dialogue about some of the most famous historical sights, culture, and heritage of Scotland. Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish are amazing narrators for the audiobook as their individual expertise and banter create an in depth experience for the reader.
I found the chapters on kilts and Black Duncan of Seven Castles especially interesting and enjoyable.
Shelved in Adult Nonfiction - Travel, I highly recommend to anyone exploring their Scottish ancestry and heritage, wanting to travel to Scotland, or are fans of Outlander.

I sometimes had no idea what they were on about, but this was a hilarious and endearing story. Lots of fun!
This was such a wonderful read! Part autobiographical, part travel blog, part historical non fiction, it was a mash up of a book that worked on so many levels. Being Scottish, it was so rewarding to read about two Scottish actors discovering more about our country and sharing facts about our history - the chapters on Glencoe and Culloden especially were so well researched and shared by both in such an emotive way it almost had me tearing up. Sam and Graham's banter throughout the book was also excellent and I genuinely was laughing out loud at so many points. Definitely need to watch Men in Kilts and I'm even more excited to read Sam's solo book when it comes out. Really hope they do something like this again because I couldn't get enough of it!
Fun with Sam and Graham, and some Scottish history thrown in.
Loved it, now I just want to watch the TV series.
Just wish it had been a bigger book with more stories.

Very engaging and funny book. I like Sam Heughan a lot - he is certainly diversifying his portfolio and bringing his friends with him. He's a smart guy!
