I don't enjoy reading classics I swear. Took me almost a month to finish this book because I had no interest in picking it back up. I only decided to finish this book because I didn't want any books I started in 2024 into 2025. My english teacher told me to read this book and well I might have to re-read it in the future, but lets pray I don't.
I would highly recommend reading this classic. The depth of the message is timeless, and the interesting mode of telling the story is brilliant (especially considering when and at what age it was authored).
240 pages of whining
yk what could have prevented this? if that insufferable manbaby didnt spend months creating some giant ugly creature just to abandon him. he didnt even have some grand purpose (and no 'love of science' isnt a valid excuse if your creation doesnt serve humanity in any way)
i did feel bad for the creature but some of the dialogue sounded like an incels manifesto. wdym you'll forgive him if he makes u a creature wife who's equally ugly so no one but you will be able to love her? surely yk best how miserable it is to live like that? why are you assuming she'll be content with the life that you designed for her?
the writing was brilliant, it was relatively fast paced compared to other classics. i loved the parallels with paradise lost but one section really pissed me off. (addressed to the creature after he gets revenge on frankenstein)
"it is well that you have come here to whine over the desolation that you have made. you throw a torch into a pile of buildings, and when they are consumed, you sit among the ruins and lament the fall. hypocritical fiend!"
????????
like your friend has been doing for the past 200+ pages? surely you would get the irony of what ur saying after listening to that whole story but no. not a single shred of self awareness. i hope your ship sinks
edit/ js finished rereading. this is really unfair to mary shelley. sorry mary shelley, i dont have the option to give dracula 0 stars to justify rating this a 2 so i'm gonna bump it up to 4 stars. its acc super interesting when you look at it as a thought experiment on the ethics of creation and not a horror story (it does suck as a horror story. you cant humanize a creature to hell and then pretend hes uncanny okay) flowers on your grave mary shelley.

honest opinion? people always say that they think Frankenstein is the monster but if you ask me i believe they both have redeemable and irredeemable qualities about themselves. one tested the limits of humanity and tried to play God while the other was a confused newborn in a way. just a big mess of morals and rights and wrongs.
