The Enchanted Castle

I have read this book a few times and I just listened to it via audiobook. For some reason, even though I had read this book more than once, I hardly remembered anything. It was such a fun book. It's a prefect summer read for kids and even adults. The fantasy aspect is so fun and all the kids are such great characters!

To be honest, I read the first half and skimmed the second half. I would have enjoyed this more if I was quite a lot younger, it gave me solid enid blyton vibes and the plot was clever and unexpected, but just a bit all over the place for my current preferences. Still I am glad that I read this classic.

“Mintalah sesuatu yang benar-benar kau inginkan.”
“Tentu saja. Aku akan mengucapkan satu-satunya permohonan yang bener-benar aku inginkan. Aku mohon agar temanku hadir disini.”

Jadi inget film Zathura: A Space of Adventure deh.
dongeng klasik yang penuh sihir.

Ceritanya menarik kok walo terjemahannya emang kurang pas di beberapa bagian.

In the early aughts when I was 19 years old in Bakersfield, CA, I walked to a used book store a couple blocks away. I got into a conversation with the lady behind the counter and she told me that there’s a book she always wished she could remember, something old-fashioned about siblings finding a magic castle. I immediately said, “The Enchanted Castle by E. Nesbit!” Her jaw dropped; yes, that’s it! I left feeling like a book hero.
Fast forward to 2022 and I have no recollection ever reading this or anything in the plot (probably due to my bad memory), but only because that incident stuck in my mind did I want to read it (again?). The first fourth was interesting enough and the magic ring makes it easy to see where Tolkien got some inspiration. Somewhere along the way after one of the kids uses black face with an Indian accent to swindle some money, I lost interest. Especially with the ugly-wugglies. But I can see where it’d be a thrilling tale for kids over a century ago. In each magical episode, the children are in some way outsmarting the adults, but also learning to be careful what they wish for. I’ll give it 2.5 stars for that classic children book vibe.

Very charming. Somehow I didn't read this one despite having read Narnia and [a:Frances Hodgson Burnett|2041|Frances Hodgson Burnett|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/authors/1197934848p2/2041.jpg] but I saw it on a list of influential children's fantasy books and thought I'd pick it up. It has many unexpected twists and also a lot of discussion about the joys of an excellent afternoon tea when you're hungry.
