Play Dirty is book 2 in the Wages of Sin series. I was not thrilled with Book 1 but was able to round up 2 ½ stars to 3. Play Dirty is also a solid 2 ½ stars but I can’t in good conscience round up. I was bored throughout most of the book. The first 50 % was very porn without plotish, lots of sex, but no character development and no connection or chemistry between the characters. Then the story picked up a bit, but it honestly was not all that exciting, and finally around 90% the MCs flipped a switch and became ridiculously lovey-dovey, and we ended with a saccharinely sweet, outlandish, dysfunctional family corn-fest.

The plot that does exist, mostly comes from book 1. Cas now has the list of really bad guys, has donned the persona of the Red Queen and has set up a Deadpool, effectively allowing the professional assassins to provide a Dexter-esh public service. Madigan – Madi to his friends; the “mean girl” from Book 1 and Cas’s BF Jonah’s bestie is invited to play, as is Azrael Malka – the Angel of Death. Madi and Az have been dancing around each other for years, mixing casual sex with incapacitating each other and then stealing the other’s intended target and scooping up the big payoff. Until Az suggests they put aside their rivalry and team up and go for the elite targets and split the earnings. Cas and Jonah have a couple of cameos and Book 3 is set up with the introduction of Dr. Tobias Eastman, the basass psychiatrist who will be paired with Soren – Madigan’s former mentor. Dr. Eastman specializes in counseling deviants and psychopaths – surprisingly – it’s all voluntary and they seek him out. (Like “Hi I’m a psychopath and I’d like to tell you my deepest, darkest secrets and then let you walk away”). Not one part of that sentence is plausible, which solidifies that this series is a wrap for me.

i liked this book a lot better than the first one. it had its problems: madigan being an ass for too long and az doing something very bad when everything was finally well.

“What the fuck are you doing?” Madigan whispered, sounding vaguely horrified. “Snuggling me. You think I’m going to let you turn me into the little spoon? I am not a little spoon.”

after a couple of chapters madigan’s “ground rule” and the hot&cold way he acted became tiresome.

Okay, Azrael is just the best. I love him. He and Madigan make the best team. And couple. Give me complicated, damaged, sweet-but-deadly men forever, thanks. Everything about this book was a joy. Loved the background plot and all the details we got about the MCs' history. Seeing the gang all together was fun, too. I suspect this one will be my favorite of the series easily.

re-read: I still absolutely love these two.

this and all future rereads: Az and Madi are just the best. I adore this series so much.
