Signa has been followed by Death since the very first breath she took in this world. Her parents, family members, everyone who has taken her in has perished. They have also been more interested in her fortune than her. All she has ever wanted is to make her mother proud and be accepted in society. She thinks she may just get her wish when she goes to live with her last living relatives, the Hawthornes, but everything at Hawthorne manor is the exact opposite of what she thought. Death has once again followed her here and she is not having it this time. She decides to get to the bottom of what is going on with her family, Death and their mysterious connection be damned.

I have heard RAVING reviews about this book and they definitely didn't disappoint. This was such an easy fantasy read that gave me gothic-high society-murder mystery vibes. Death had me SWOONING. I mean, the things that he would say, are you kidding me? He was so romantic!
I had a great time reading this one! It was so much fun. Will definitely be reading Foxglove in the near future.

Oh man, I loved this in all of the most unexpected ways! This was like the perfect mix of gothic, fantasy, thriller and romance.

It was a little slow in the beginning but once it picked up towards the halfway point, I was excited to see where it was going to go. And honestly, most of the lead up was necessary for context and story building - in hindsight.

I gotta say, a book that can make me root for death incarnate (literally) is doing something amazing. I just kept thinking “am I actually having feelings for… Death?” 😏
The overall “twist” about his overall form was also done in a really satisfying way.

And I didn’t expect the murder-mystery element in this book either, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The vibes absolutely “touch her and die” (literally, because he IS death) and I loved it.
And the “little bird” nickname made me absolutely swoooooon… 🫠

Tropes:
Enemies to Lovers Vibes
Touch Her and Die

Kept me guessing, and seconding guessing all the way to the end.

Belladonna started off a little slow for me. It was an intriguing enough concept that I wanted to keep reading but it wasn't until about a third of the way in that it really started to grab me. This is a murder mystery fantasy with death magic. The way that the story and mystery unfolded through Signa's investigation was fantastic. I am constantly trying to figure out the twists in a book (and regularly can) but who the little hints and even misdirections were done had me going back and forth between thinking I had it figured out and then second guessing everything I thought I had worked out. It certainly made the book hard to put down, particularly in the last third of the book.

I also really enjoyed the character development in this book, and the unravelling of the reasons behind some of the characters choices. The dynamics between Signa, Sylas and Death were great. The romance was well done with a speck of heat in there. I am definitely invested in where the rest of the series goes.
