The City of Heavenly Fire was a satisfying conclusion to the Clary/Jace story begun in book 1. I enjoyed the development of their relationship-- took them 6 books to get it on, and after book 5 I thought -- "Wow, there is nothing stopping them now..." and then: heavenly fire. Great twist, and much better than the recurring theme of incest.

While I enjoyed the main series characters' stories-Jace, Clary, Izzy, Simon, Alec- immensely, I found the sales pitch for the next series highly irritating. If you want a teaser for the next series, for the love the Angel, make it short. The addition of the Emma POV was boring, clearly out of place and clearly backstory for something to come. I continually thought "Why should I care about these children and WTF does it have to do with Jace and Clary saving the day?" Oh, absolutely nothing, but we'll force a link in there.

Not having read the prequels or other side stories, the book was a little hard to follow in spots. I don't really know what the big deal with Herondales was and it wasn't explained. I should give the author credit for planting breadcrumbs to her other books. This is a good trick if you can master it.

Lastly, I feel like her publisher said "Hey make sure you throw in some more LGBT stuff to appeal to that audience." The scenes with Alec and Magnus were touching and I was so happy when they finally got together, but it began to feel like pandering toward the end. The relationship was basically resolved, but they kept hammering on it. Same with the Aline/Helen inclusion. They weren't important to the plot, but the box for inclusion is checked.

It may sound like I'm picking on this book harshly, but I did enjoy the main plot line immensely. I laughed and cried at all the appropriate spots. Sebastian had it coming!

Likes:
I genuinely liked the story in this book. I think there were some irrelevant scenes but most of the book was wasted. Sometimes a big book can feel like it wasn’t as long as it was, this book accomplished that. I think her fight scenes have GREATLY improved. Another thing I really, really loved in this book was the team. In book one, this group was a full team who fought together and the books in between the first book and this one lost it. Clare brought it back in this book. I really enjoy reading these books because I love the way I read them. I review these books more thoroughly than any other books that I have ever read and it makes me want to read more of her books. One thing I do give her props for is always expressing full consent during romantic scenes. I just think it is important to show it to the audience these books are meant for. I also like the references to her other books. I have briefly skimmed what all the other books were about. They mentioned a ghost from London, which I could assume is from the prequal books. Magnus also mentions Will Herondale from the prequals. Mangus said he wrote a bunch of his stories down for Alec, I can only assume these must be the Bane Chronicles. Also, the characters that star in the Dark Artifices and even the references to the Codex.
Dislikes:
These books have been so cringey to read. For one, characters make jokes when and where they wouldn’t or shouldn’t. That last book was the worst. I still just don’t understand why any of these people like each other, other than their looks. I do think Cassandra Clare could say more in less. She has a bit of a habit of spelling things out, it is just written awkwardly for me. I think she just likes saying clever things. The push of incest never stops in these books. She built this story as if Sebastian now wanted to be loved and then it still happened to be incestual love and it just is too weird for me. Simon and Izzy will never make sense to me. As I have mentioned, I still think these epilogues are painfully long and not needed. More of Cassandra Clare trying to sound clever and make her characters seem more in love and cleaver.

Saco de esta saga lo siguiente:

  • Amo a Simon 🥹 el verdadero MVP
  • Lizzie is the best.

But....
  • Nunca me caerá bien Clary.
My bad!
  • Nada de esto se podría haber logrado sin Magnus or Simon tbh.
  • La clave sucks!
Yyy ... me emociona leer la siguiente saga. See you!
