I remembered The Nanny Diaries being fun in audio, so I looked forward to this. It had a rough start, but I stayed with it anyway. I even finished the book, but in retrospect I'm not sure why I did. The authors go out of their way to detail reprehensible behavior in many of the characters, and it is exasperating that for most there is no real consequence or even confrontation. More so than I recall in the first book, Nan is always acted upon. She doesn't deliberately do or say much herself, even when the opportunity is there. I know I was supposed to feel for her, but I didn't.

This sequel did not live up to the first book. I couldn’t put the Nanny Diaries down, but struggled to read and finish Nanny Returns. I enjoyed getting to know where Nan and Grayer ended up, but otherwise had trouble getting through this book.

Character overload - we should not have to remember that many names and backgrounds to move this story forward.

That aside, the storyline was good and it was an emotional follow-up to the previous novel's emotional ending. Stilton was probably the most interesting character, and Grayer's character development was exactly what I would expect given the situation.

Still reads like a soap opera, but I liked that about it. These characters could be real even though they seem so ridiculous.

i enjoyed 'the nanny diaries' in a masochistic kind of way- maybe i like to have vicarious victim's complexes through literature? hmm. anyway, i picked this one up for more of the same. the writing is pretty slick & witty, and i enjoy the way mclaughlin & kraus make fun of NYC society. (although, as i am from the humble midwest, some of their references went over my hick head.)

so i spent the whole book yelling at nan to stay away from the x family- essentially she becomes their nanny again, only unpaid, but otherwise there would be no book. so. and then she's in this horrible job doing horrible things for horrible people and totally compromising her morals, but this isn't really addressed that much, because the job just disappears in the end. also, she's supposedly having all these problems with her marriage, but her husband is in africa on business. so then i'm yelling at nan to just chill out and wait until ryan comes back from africa before she decides she's headed for a divorce.

in summary, a lot of drama and yelling, and we must sadly conclude that nan did not learn her lesson the first time around. skip it unless you really loved 'the nanny diaries.'

Started slow and was a bit all over the place, but once Nan and I got reacquainted, I was happily (?) right back with her and the Xes.

A quick and easy read. If you liked The Nanny Diaries, you'll also like Nanny Returns.
