This book was beautiful, in a sad and haunting way. All of the characters in this book are haunted by something — and we see this especially in the main character Etsuko as she dwells in tragedies of both the recent and distant pasts. At the same time, we can see battling cultural and social values at play underneath the narrative. Very incredible work, especially for a first published novel.
