I think this book was about cycles, of abuse or love or mistakes. Growth is presented to be linear with the ghost of mistake haunting this path we go down.
I don’t think anyone really grows or learns. But they do change, and that isn’t presented as a given. Things change as time marches on like the months of the narrative, but the characters have to nearly die to change. Maybe we do too. Mellors suggests that change is an internal process that lapses reality into a cycle of behavioural patterns. If you’re a drunk in New York, you be a drunk in Italy- not a huge surprise.
Placing the responsibility of breaking free from the loop of fate is placed on the individual. The catalyst for this could be anything from a mothers well-wishes to one’s first orgasm. I think, between the lines, every character receives their ‘wake up calls’ in one way or another, just not all of them choose to answer.
But I believe they will come again.
I don’t think that just because they missed the train that they’ll never get to where they’re going. Another will come along, maybe not on schedule.
But it is up to them to take that step.

I loved this. It’s quite depressing but also hopeful. I rally love Coco Mellor’s writing and how she creates characters that I love but get so frustrated with.
