Como detesto estas situaciones de acoso escolar y de acoso sexual, de homofobia, me parecen repugnantes

When I opened this book, I suddenly realized it was by the same mangaka who had created "Boys, be ambitious" - a manga I hadn't liked at all. So even though I had ordered it because it had been praised on tumblr and other places and because it was on a list of the 20 best BL manga of the year I was suddenly doubtful whether I'd like it or not. As you can see from the rating, I did.

However, I am kind of hesitant to call it a BL manga, so very non-BL this is. Yes, it's about gay boys, and yes, there is a bit of romance, but it is more a coming-of-age story and accepting who you are and figuring out your sexuality story than the typical boy-meets-boy-turns-gay-for-boy story. And the central friendship in this story felt more important to story than the romance.

But anyway, what's it about? Three boys growing up in a small rural town. Mishima has long hair and looks feminine and graceful, and as a result is bullied by the other boys, among them Kirino and Yumeno, both part of the soccer club. Mishima secretly puts on his mother's make up sometimes, and has long realized he's gay. One day, he meets Kirino while he's outside wearing lipstick, and it's that lipstick that ends up changing everything. Because Kirino, too, wants to look like a girl sometimes, and so that is the start of their friendship. When Yumeno realizes the two of them have grown closer, he gets angry - because, Kirino suggests, he's really in love with Mishima. But can he really accept that he's fallen in love with a guy?

Even though I hate the weird faces she draws sometimes, overall the art was very good and the panel layout during some scenes was exceptionally well done.

Overall, it's a very serious and moving story that feels really genuine and that definitely deserves the praise it's been getting. It's not perfect - for example I have mixed feelings about the cross-dressing part - but it has a lot of things going for it, like the very different relationship between the three boys and their mothers.

I'm glad I read it despite my initial misgivings, and I highly recommend reading it if you get the chance.
