I think this had the potential to be a REALLY great book, but it didn't stand up to that for me. I really like the series and it seems like it's still heading in the right direction and everything (this one didn't fall off the rails, don't get me wrong here), but it was just a good book. And that hasn't been typical of Mark Lawrence's books for me. I think this was his worst yet, and here I am giving it 4 stars, and a "Really liked it" rating here. Nice work!

So why didn't I love it? Well, the first half felt drawn out, which is something I've never once thought about his books. They're normally short, tight, and expertly paced. I felt like we spent a lot of time following Nona around the convent with not a lot happening. To make up for that, I thought the big climax, exciting stuff was a bit rushed. The final fight scenes and revelations and cliffhangers rushed past me at hunska speed, and while in some parts we were able to see things happening in slow-motion, in others we were left watching things happen at impossible speeds, unable to see any of the details.

We didn't get much advancement on Sister Cage, or what's going on in the world at large, or what the backstory is. I'm excited to see that kind of thing develop in Holy Sister.

Middle books tend to be very detail heavy and slow but Grey Sister was everything! Literally felt like I went from Red Sister Action to Grey Sister Action and I'm happy I read them back to back.

Grey Sister in book 2 in the Book of Ancestor Trilogy. Im happy to say I enjoyed this one a lot more.

Grey Sister takes place two years after the events of Red Sister. In book 1 we saw Nona through Red Class and Grey Class. In this one we again start in the school setting by following Nonas journey into Mystic Class. By the second half of the book we start to move away from the school setting and see more of the outside world. This is where my enjoyment kicked up a notch.

I also enjoyed the characters more in this one especially Nona. Her character development was fantastic. In ways she's still the same girl loyal, kind and who's life has hardened her. But she's also more confident and angry which I loved. Her development fits the narrative perfectly.

I also enjoyed the new PoVs it added a layer of depth to the characters and world I think I was missing from book 1.

As always Mark Lawrences world building is incredible he really knows how to create an atmosphere and I loved that this world opened up more.

The action scenes were fantastic, however as much as I enjoyed the second half I do think it could benefit from slowing down a little. I would of liked a little more room to breathe between the action.

Overall I loved this one and can't wait to get to book 3.

Loved the first book, Red Sister, in this series and this was just as good. Well developed characters that you really feel attached too and some great world building too. This instalment really expands the plot and I’m long forward to reading book 3 to see how it all concludes.

So good. I don't want to have to wait for the next book. The only thing that bothered me about this book was that the author needs to use commas more. Things like: "Outside the rain began to fall", should be "Outside, the rain began to fall". (By the way, that's not a quote from the book, just an example of what is constant throughout the book) It took me out of the story more than it should have. It was a great story, but that's my one and only, very small complaint.

Great follow up that increases the stakes and the character dynamics in a fantastic way. That being said it still definitely feels character driven and the over all plot is very slow in my opinion to form and play out.
