A moving tale of love, that once received it can be given again and again. Only love can cultivate more love.

This is a lovely children’s picture book about a boy who wants to give his father the best Christmas present he can. They are a farming family and do not have a lot of money. The boy regularly wakes up in the morning to help his father milk the cows, but for Christmas, he decides to wake up super early to finish the chores so that when his father goes to the barn, he is surprised to find all of his work is done for him!

This is in my top 4 Christmas books, a remarkable feat for a story I didn't read until last year. Just so beautiful. I need. To get it together and read The Good Earth.

I've long loved this story (never realizing it was by Pearl Buck). The artwork in this version is gentle and sweet.

A wonderful short story that shows how love is truly the best gift that you can give your loved ones.

The story is about a boy, who even after becoming a man, remembers a Christmas when he truly realised the meaning of loving and how it was the perfect gift for his father.

Love does not need any money or even effort, it just is and when it is, I guess it is easy to express. For most of us cynics out there, this is truly a lesson in loving and being loved.

"Love alone can awaken love" -I don't think truer words have ever been spoken in relation to this wonderful sentiment.

So go out there and tell all your dear ones how much you love them, for that is truly the greatest gift you can give your loved ones. For this is something that they will definitely cherish for a really long time, just as this boy remembered and cherished his father's love for him, for several years after the death of his father.

Such a beautiful story, but a little advanced for young elementary children. I had to explain what was happening on almost every page. But it’s worth it! Rob overhears his dad say he wished he could do the farm chores on his own so he didn’t have to wake Rob up so early. This is the first time Rob realize that his father really does love him. He decides to surprise his dad with a beautiful act of service as a Christmas present because he feels like the tie he bought him is no longer enough. I really like the way the gift is addressed. It beautifully illustrates real gift giving, giving of ourselves and our time. It is a great what to show (not tell) kids that service is the beat gift you can give.
