Child me would have lost their mind if they'd known this existed. This is my new favorite book.

I enjoyed this more than my daughter did. It was an interesting fairy tale retelling, and I enjoyed the implication of the dream.

The Russian-style artwork is beautiful and I love the fairy godmother chicken. The story itself was the usual Cinderella story just with chickens.

My only regret is that Cinderella never talks. But it's such a pretty book, though I've no idea why chickens. Nor do I care, to be honest. It's a little girl's dream and it works for me.

Really more of a 2.5 (seriously? Cinderella with CHICKENS for the characters??) but Brett's artwork is simply stunning and that was the entire reason I wanted to check out and read this book.
I'd like to see more original stories...

In this fowl retelling of a classic fairy tale, Cinders is shunned by her fellow hens and left behind when it's time for the ball. With the help of a fairy hen, she is able to look her best and turns many a neck at the event, but must flee by midnight. In the end, true honesty wins everyone over and there is a bright and shimmering egg for those who wait. Neo liked this, especially the wonderful drawings. He was, however, a little creeped out by all the dressed-up chickens in their finery. I suppose some chickens are only meant to be dressed with breadcrumbs and thyme!

These are the fanciest fancy chickens and I love them all (this is not a good book)

This is the Cinderella story, but chickens. No, not a chicken-y Cinderella, but the Cinderella we know so well, glass slipper and all, but--with chickens. Cinderella is a chicken (but not a particularly chicken-y chicken). One reviewer on this site calls this unnecessary, and maybe it is? But, I love Jan Brett's illustrations. If she wants to tell a possum Sleeping Beauty or a hyena Twelve Dancing Princesses, I'm down.
